Art Show Film

Script Sample -

Full Script Here

At first, I was having a hard time coming up with ideas for the film, but as I was talking with William, I remembered a book that I once read called 'One of Us is Lying', and that was where I got my inspiration for the script. In the book five characters go to detention; The nerd, the dealer, the popular girl, the baseball player, and Simon, the character that dies during detention. Up to the end, the book builds this mystery on who killed Simon and shows the personal side of each character while they are being investigated. When we set up the overall idea of the film we partnered with Morgan and Emiro to elaborate more on the script. We ended up recycling some of the characters and putting a twist on the story. Ben Richards (the nerd) was played by Will, Jessica Hart (the dealer) was played by Morgan, Ricardo Alvarez (the football player) was played by Emiro, and Michelle Diaz (the snitch who dies) was played by me. We each incorporated our characters and discussed the dialogs from their points of view. Up to the end of the script, we weren't sure how Michelle would die, it could be by suicide and have a meaningful end or it could be a funny ending, where she would die from peanut butter allergy.

When we were done writing the script, we got the camera and went out filming. We tried to use the techniques we learned so far in class, such as the 180 degrees rule, mise en scene, adjusting the ISO, and exposure, and some editing techniques such as match cutting to give continuity. Overall, I think the film came out pretty similar to what I envisioned, if we had more time we could probably elaborate more at the end, but I think it turned out fine. I believe the most successful part of the film was probably working in a group and writing the script. The least successful part of the film was probably the shot execution, some shots could have been done better, especially the last one where the camera wasn't very still. We could have improved by using a moving tripod to have a variety of moving shots that are not shaky.

This project taught me how to work with a larger group and collaborate with each other, how to write a script and plan my shots and locations before filming, and make a cool poster for the art show.
